Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
SKN Complex we are about the science when developing our products. And science tells us that there are certain chemicals traditionally used in skin care products that are actually harmful to the skin. Chemical such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate for instance.
What is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate?
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is commonly known as SLS is a detergent and surfactant which essentially means that it breaks surface tension and separates molecules in order to allow better interaction between the product and your hair. This in turn, creates a lather which makes products such as shampoo and toothpaste more effective cleaners. So effective and so inexpensive is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate that its even found in engine degreasers!
SLS is a known skin irritant and is widely used by cosmetic companies to irritate the skin first when testing other products for their healing properties. It seems strange that these same companies would then use it in other cosmetic products just so that it would soap up more.
SLS strips oils and moisture from the skin. It has the ability to penetrate the dermal layers and enter the blood stream whilst the caustic lathering agent can destroy the lipids that keep the skin smooth and supple. Studies have shown that SLS can contribute to mouth ulcers and gum irritation when used in toothpaste and mouthwash.
So if your skin or scalp is dry, flaky or itchy or your eyes sting, check the labels of the products you are using to see if it contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and Ammonium Laurel Sulfate (ALS) as it may be what is causing the irritation. Stop and switch to a SLS-free products and see if it makes the difference.
Here at SKN Complex we strive to avoid including nasty chemicals like SLS in our products.
